Zen Design Basics

If you have been coming to my site for awhile now, I'm sure you'd have read that for 2009, I am dead-set on moving to a new home. Chinese horoscope predictions for Year of the Rooster said so and Zodiac sign predictions for Aries agrees. Check out my previous blogs for reference. I have been sifting through magazines and sites for months now looking for bed, bath and kitchen designs. My husband and I both agree on two things--- sleek, modern design or bare and stark, stripped-to-the-minimum zen.

Zen design is inspired by Zen Buddhism which is known for its values such as calmness, harmony, and meditation.

When creating a design based on Zen values, things we have to keep in mind are – simplicity, cleanliness, minimalist designs, soft lighting, and the use of mirrors.

After a stressful day at work, it’s nice to come home and sit back, put your feet up, and forget all of your pressures. But not all homes are conducive to this kind of relaxation; in fact, most of us carry our problems all the way to the bedroom. Often, the problem is simply the way your home is designed.

If you have trouble relaxing at home, you may want to consider adopting Zen design.

Zen design is based on Zen Buddhism, a religion that values calmness, meditation, and harmony. A Zen home encourages relaxation by making everything simple and minimal, and keeping all the visual elements in balance.

Here are some guidelines in Zen design and how you can apply them to your home:

1. Minimalist design.

Zen favors straight, simple lines, solid colors, and minimal use of accessories—the foundations of minimalist design. But while minimalist homes can seem cold and sleek, a Zen home is also warm, comfortable and inviting. You can achieve this by going for softer lighting and warmer colors, instead of the usual stark black and white.

2. Natural materials.

Wood, stone, and water are the primary elements in Zen design. This doesn’t mean you can’t use synthetics; besides, it’s hard to build a sturdy home with these three alone. Use them for contrast: warm wood against cold metal, sturdy stone against delicate glass. The bathroom is a great place to apply contrast. A stone sink, for example, will look great on a dainty white countertop, while a metal handle will go with wooden cabinet doors.

3. No clutter.

To keep with the minimalist theme, reduce the clutter in your home. Things that are lying around or taking up unnecessary space can be distracting, which counters the purpose of relaxation. If you have things that should stay in the room, such as books or tools, keep them in storage cabinets. Use wall-mounted or built-in storage to maximize the floor space and make the room seem airier.

4. Soft lighting.

Ample light helps brighten a minimalist room, but too much brightness can overwhelm it. That’s why filtered light is a staple in Zen design. Instead of just letting in natural sunlight through the windows, use frosted glass to mute the light that comes in. Instead of a ray of bright light illuminating one area, you get a spray of calm, soft light spreading across the room. In the evenings, small accent lights throughout the room work better than one big lamp lighting the area.

5. Reflection.

When you’re working with soft light, you rely on things inside the room to maximize it. This means reflecting the light from the source to another area, so that more of the room is illuminated. This can be achieved with ample use of mirrors, which bounce off the light and basically provide twice the brightness. The mirror can occupy an entire wall or span over the countertop, or even go on the ceiling.

Keeping things Zen is essentially keeping things to the minimum. Who knows? Adopting this design in your home might just spill on over to keeping things simple in your life as well.

Lucky Colors for 2009

The Lucky Colors for 2009 may be determined by defining the movement of lucky energies in a Feng Shui period.
One feng shui school of thought is the Flying Star which deals with the time factor.
Each time period in feng shui lasts for 20 years and, as there are 9 periods, a complete cycle takes 180 years.
Period 8 started on Feb.4, 2004. The feng shui bagua trigram that represents period 8 is the Ken Trigram. Ken Trigram is representative of the feng shui element of earth, youthful energy and the direction of Northeast.

The Earth element define the most auspicious or luckiest feng shui colors and materials for the feng shui period 8.
Light yellow color (earthy feng shui color) is considered very auspicious in period 8, thus yellow feng shui crystals are wonderful energy enhancers as they double the desired lucky energy for period 8 with their color (yellow) as well as material (earth).

Choose yellow citrine, yellow amber, or yellow jasper. You can bring their feng shui energy into your home with the actual crystals or with specific decor items made from crystals, such as small bowls or carvings.
You can also benefit from their feng shui energy when you wear these crystals for jewelry.
The auspicious feng shui energy for the period 8 can also be drawn with the feng shui earth element materials, such as decor items made from clay, ceramics, stones, etc.
In addition, if you're about to build a house, as I am planning to this year, the Northeast direction is lucky in the feng shui period 8. Your house will absorb more luck if the main door faces Northeast.

Pisces 2009

Feng Shui 2009

For 2009, as my yearly horoscope prediction suggested, I have set my sights on moving into a new home. You see, I had 3 choices to offset any possible mishaps this year--- 1) Get married, 2) Get pregnant or 3) Move into a new home. As I'm already married, with no plans of having children yet--- I'm left with one choice: Get a new house. And I decided if I was gonna move into a new crib then it was gonna be the luckiest move I'll ever make.

Feng Shui, pronounced as "fung-shway", is an ancient art and science based on the Taoist vision and understanding of nature, particularly on the idea that the land is alive and filled with Chi, or energy. Feng Shui reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure good fortune and good health for people who live in it.

A Feng Shui house is a house where all the objects are in perfect harmony to each other. Since Feng Shui is about balancing energies, that of the soul with that of the universe, you get the positive energies of the universe flowing through the entire spaces in your house.

The Yin and Yang Energies

Creating a home that will reflect the feng shui Yin Yang balance is very important. YIN is the feng shui energy of silence, deep darkness, slow and relaxed movements while YANG is the feng shui energy that is characterized by strong, vibrant sounds and colors, bright lights and bustling activity.

Yin colors are:

1. Blue

Calm and soothing, this color has great significance in Feng Shui as it reflects love as it heals and relaxes. It creates a feeling of peace and trust. Also associated with adventure, exploration, intellect and wisdom.

2. Black

This color symbolizes money and income, black is great for careers, especially when combined with metal. It is the Feng Shui color of emotional protection and power.

3. Purple

Excellent for physical and mental healing and Feng Shui associates it with spiritual awareness.

4. White

White represents poise, confidence and purity. Because of its yin energy, white in Feng Shui is used mostly in combination with gold or silver to generate a calm atmosphere.

5. Green

My favorite color. The color of renewal, fresh energy and new beginnings. A great color for healing.

Yang colors are:

1. Yellow

Yellow in Feng Shui is considered to be as lucky as red. It represents warmth, cheerfulness and friendliness. Prolonged exposure to large amounts of intense yellow however, can cause anxiety.

2. Orange

Strengthens concentration. Used to give you a sense of purpose as it is the color of organization

The other yang colors of Feng Shui are Beige, Brown, Red, Lavender and Gold.

When these elements are balanced in your living quarters, your life is better balanced, and you are more likely to have what you want in life.

There are two more ways to utilize them: the Creative Cycle and the Destructive Cycle. The Creative Cycle involves one element "creating" another . For example, water "feeds" or creates wood. The Destructive Cycle order is different because an element can overpower another one. For instance, water will "douse" or destroy fire.

The Feng Shui Bagua is a map or chart relating the various areas of your life to the 8 sections, called "guas" of your living space. The center would be the 9th section.

To use the bagua on your home, stand at the threshold of your frontdoor facing in and hold the diagram so that the blue, black, and gray guas are closest to you. The floor plan of your house will then be divided into 9 different zones.

2009 Chinese New Year

2009 is here!

I don't know about you but I've always had a thing about welcoming a new year. Gives me such a good feeling--- a chance for new beginnings.

If you were not able to welcome the new year with a bang, then grab this chance to welcome the coming Chinese New Year with more gusto!

So for January 26, 2009, the chinese new year date for the year of the ox, TRY TO:

1. Greet people with “Kung Hei Fat Choy” or “Gong Xi Far Tsai” (Happy New Year) to bring good fortune and prosperity.

Learning to say "Kung Hei Fat Choy" the right way might seem hard at first because I hear different versions of it every time but the essence of saying it would always stay the same: wishing others the same HAPPY new year that we would want for ourselves.

2. Clean your house and sweep out the bad luck of the previous year.

Chinese new year is actually celebrated up to 22 days prior and for 15 days after. While preparing for the coming year, people clean out their houses, wash their utensils, and discard unwanted items, all to make sure that the New Year begins fresh and clean.

3. Give yourself a cleansing, too.

Buy new clothing for the New Year and get your hair done. Getting a haircut is something we do a couple of times a year, why not do it now when it's considered LUCKY?

Do all this prior to the holiday, because doing this during New Year’s season they say, would invite a financial setback.

Debts must also be paid, in order to start the New Year with a clean slate.

4. Cast aside old grudges and earn forgiveness.

It always takes two to tango and you can't fully cast aside old hurts and pains without being with the person you quarreled with in the first place. But knowing inside, that you have forgotten and more importantly, forgiven will give you inner peace and invite better positive energies for the year ahead.

5. Ward off bad luck by draping red cloth on your doorway.

Red has always been a color associated with good luck and your doorway, the opening to your house, and in essence, your life will need all the help it can to keep out the bad luck.

My cousin's wife also shared with me that as a tradition in welcoming the new year at exactly midnight, her father opens all doors and windows and leaves all the lights on to send off bad spirits and invite good ones in.

6. Eat lucky foods for a prosperous New Year.

The Chinese have many superstitions when it comes to food. Some of these include:

1. Mustard greens for longevity

2. Long noodles for long life. (Pancit anyone? Remember cutting them is bad luck)

3. Chinese New Year lucky cake Melon to increase fertility

4. Candy to ensure a sweet year

5. Lotus seed for having many male offsprings

6. Ginkgo nut representing silver ingots or wealth

7. Black moss seaweed and dried bean curd both eaten for wealth

8. Bamboo shoots for good health

9. A whole chicken to symbolize completeness

10. Fish - half on New Year’s Eve, and half the next day to transfer last year’s remaining luck to the New Year

Some of these foods are considered lucky because their names mean something fortunate in Chinese. Likewise, other foods are considered unlucky because their names sound like unlucky words in Chinese.

7. Give red “lucky money” envelopes to pass on prosperity and good luck.

On New Year’s Eve, meet for a special dinner, and give your children or loved ones red envelopes containing gifts of lucky money.

The money should start in even numbers, such as two, twenty, and so on, as odd numbers are only given for funerals. So give P200 instead of P100 (hehe).

It should never add up to four however, as the number for four sounds like the word for death, and is therefore bad luck.

Six is lucky, and is often the amount chosen for lucky money envelopes.

For New Year’s Day, from 12 midnight, light some fireworks, fire up those firecrackers and whistling rockets to frighten off evil spirits and venerate the gods.

In the morning, light some ceremonial candles, burn incense and some paper money, too. Visit a church, or more appropriately, a chinese temple.

DO NOT SWEEP on New Year’s Day to avoid sweeping away the family’s good luck.

Avoid using knives, scissors and sharp instruments as these could cause harm, or cut off fortune, as do breaking any dishes.

The Chinese culture is very rich and I have great respect for the way they value and uphold their traditions. I believe that we Filipinos, have a lot to learn in that department.

I have always been interested in how to secure a better year ahead for me and my loved ones. Yes, I know, that we are mostly responsible for what happens in our lives but I've read that 1/3 of it, we should entrust to the gods of fate and luck.

It wouldn't hurt to help luck along, right? CHEERS to a bright 2009!
